The new, self-titled album by Wilde Owl (aka Tom Wilder) borrows themes from the first and explores the aftermath of loss as well as our spiritual and secular ways of processing that loss.

This album is the second offering from Wilde Owl and features the talents of Nathan Hussey of All Get Out as producer/engineer. Tom Wilder also recruited Anthony Libengood and Jamie Peterson to lend support via bass and drums, respectively.

Tom’s songwriting is simple, but not simplistic, and the arrangements are relatively sparse. This approach leaves plenty of room for the massive, washy, beautiful reverb to fill. It becomes an instrument in its own right- like a synth- and glues all the elements together, bringing out Tom’s style- equal parts somber and urgent. His vocals follow suit- layered and pretty- ranging from near-whisper to cathartic shouting.

Wilder’s lyrics on Wilde Owl are like letters to loved ones and this is my favorite thing about the album. The listener can tell how personal each track is and at times wonders for whom the words were intended.

This album maintains the spirit and honesty of Wilde Owl’s first release, but brings a new energy; one that’s still painful, but also hopeful. I highly encourage a listen or 50.
